I’m totally gonna f*** up my daughter I just know it…and so does my husband!

Betty White SNL

Well the hubby called today with my usual “Hey you’re not at work so do this crap I forgot to do” to-do list.  And then at the end of the conversation he added in this cheery thought.

Apparently he came across some recent study that concluded 1 in 66 girls under the age of 12 have an eating disorder.  (Makes you all warm and fuzzy, right?)  I proceeded to tell him “Wow, that’s really messed up, those poor girls”.  His response to me…

“Yeah, when Doll Face gets older you’re really going to have to tone down the weight obsessed rhetoric or she’s going to be one of them.”

REALLY!?!?  Really.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, honey.  You just really made my day.

But then as I walked around fuming and cleaning I started thinking about everything that comes out of my mouth in a day, especially when with my girlfriends.  And guess what?  We DO spend an inordinate amount of time on some part of the subject.  Work out routines, weight, diets, clothing sizes, post pregnancy body laments, wrinkles, hair color, comparing boobs, thighs, arms and other random body parts.   And the list could go on and on.  Most is said in a jesting manner, but how much of it is really sarcasm and how much is the truth about how we’re feeling dripped in sarcasm.  Besides I can guarantee my 4 year old isn’t going to understand sarcasm, at least not to nth degree in which I and my girlfriends use it.

So…the hubby is no doubt right.   (I just threw up a little in my mouth)  I need to tone it down starting RIGHT NOW!  We all probably need to tone it down.  I mean, we’re all gonna look like this one day anyway.

Even Heidi Klum.  And I don’t know about you but I don’t want to be the 80 year old who is worrying about who looks 74 versus who couldn’t pull off a day under 85 and have multiple female descendants who have been institutionalized for body image problems.  Okay I’m probably being dramatic but you see my point, right?

I say this not as a holier than thou asshole who has it all figured out but as a mom who desperately wants to NOT  f*** up her daughter and could use all the help she can get.

So this post is for you Doll Face.  May you always know how beautiful you are inside and out.  And on the inevitable days you don’t, may you have the things that are truly important to fall back on.  Love you always, Mom.
